Three inmates pardoned after serving more than 20 years for their involvement in the 2000 coup were reunited with their families in a moving event where tears were shed openly as two of the men publicly confessed they had done wrong and asked for forgiveness from all.
Former journalist Josefa Nata tightly embraced his son, Joshua, who was only three years old when his father was sentenced to life.
Never again, he vowed. Also pardoned was Ratu Timoci Silatolu who said the past 24 years changed his outlook on life.
He said his faith in God helped him.
“Being in prison is not easy,” he said.
“From behind bars I saw my young family grow and be successful. “So I had to keep my faith and belief in God.”
While pardoning the duo and other lifers, President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere said the release underscored the belief in the potential of rehabilitation and second chance for those who had demonstrated sincere efforts towards a positive change.
Also pardoned yesterday was Naitasiri chief Ratu Inoke Takiveikata.
