The Mataqali Nadala of the Yavusa Nubu in Nadarivatu marked a historic milestone yesterday with the return of their land after more than 120 years under government ownership.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated the formal return of Native Grant No. 2 (NG2) during a ceremony at Nadala Village, inland of Ba.
The land, spanning about 15,000 acres (6,070 hectares), was originally acquired in 1905 for public purposes including a sanatorium, forest conservation and agricultural projects.
“This is a historic moment that reaffirms the deep connection between the iTaukei people and their land and the Government’s responsibility to return land once its intended public purpose has been fulfilled,” Mr Rabuka said.
The Prime Minister said the return aligns with constitutional provisions allowing land to revert to original owners once its purpose has been met.
He acknowledged the role of government agencies, including the Ministry of Lands, the iTaukei Affairs Board and the Solicitor-General’s Office, in completing the process.
“Today, the Government returns ownership of this land to you after more than 120 years. It is now your responsibility to safeguard and utilise it for the benefit of your present and future generations,” he said.
Mr Rabuka encouraged landowners to pursue sustainable development opportunities in agriculture, business and tourism.
The return follows 42 years of efforts by the landowning unit and is expected to support economic growth and community resilience.
