RADIKE Nawalu, once a pioneering figure in Fijian soccer, continues to inspire both on and off the field. Now working at Tambua Sands Resort, Nawalu said he is grateful for the opportunity to remain active in the workforce despite being officially retired.

“First and foremost, I thank God,” Nawalu said in a statement issued by Tambua Sands.

“I’m also deeply thankful to Tambua Sands Resort management for giving me a chance to continue contributing even after retirement.”

According to the company, Mr Nawalu works in the resort’s landscapes department and also serves as a resort driver.

“Though he still practices his soccer skills occasionally, he notes that the sport has changed significantly since his playing days,” it stated.

Resort manager Angela Bob acknowledged Mr Nawalu’s dedication and vibrant personality:

“Radike is a fantastic worker, but what really stands out is his humour and his fluency in Hindi, which brightens everyone’s day. We’re proud to have him on our team.

“Warwick Resorts is committed to valuing all staff members, including those who have retired but are still fit to work.

“Radike’s story is a shining example of how experience, passion and commitment continue to make a difference.”

Mr Nawalu or Dixie as he is affectionately known as in Fiji soccer, is considered a “legend” and one of the best strikers in the country according to the Fiji Football Association (FFA).

“He was a formidable opponent for any defence from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s,” FFA’s stated in its profile on Mr Nawalu.

“Nawalu was a household name player during his prime time. Started his football career with Nadroga, played for the national team and also for the Suva team.

“He was part of the Alloway FC team in Brisbane in 1990-1991 and the 1992 Fijian national side which played out a nil-all World Cup qualifier against New Zealand in Nadi.

“He has given many victories to his teams, Nadroga, Suva and also for the national team.”
