Inia Tabuavou’s journey from the streets of Lautoka to the professional rugby fields of France and now the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is a story of resilience, determination, and giving back.
Growing up in Lautoka, Tabuavou faced immense challenges after losing his father when he was just in Class three. With no one working at home, the responsibility of supporting his family fell on his young shoulders.
“My dad was the sole breadwinner, so when he died, I had to work hard to provide for my family,” he shared.
As a child, Tabuavou sold cakes and roti on the streets and even outside Lautoka Hospital to earn a living.
“My mum would prepare the food, and I would go out and sell it. It wasn’t easy, but I knew I had to help her,” he recalled. This early struggle shaped his perspective and fuelled his ambition.
Tabuavou’s life changed when he earned a rugby scholarship to Rotorua Boys’ High School in New Zealand. From there, he joined Racing 92 in France’s Top 14 competition at just 17, making his professional debut at 19. Over five years, he gained valuable experience, but the pull of home never left him.
“I’ve missed spending Christmas with my family for four years. It was a hard decision to come back, but I’m excited to be home and join the Drua,” Tabuavou said.
His return marks a new chapter in his rugby career as he looks forward to helping the team win games, especially away matches, and representing the Flying Fijians.
Despite his success, Tabuavou has not forgotten his roots.
“When I see small kids selling on the street, I buy everything they have. Even if it’s just one roti, I’ll give them $100 because I know what it feels like. I’ve been in their shoes before.”
Today, Tabuavou not only provides for his mother, ensuring she has a comfortable home, but also inspires others with his story.
“Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I always dreamed of giving back to my mum because we had nothing and struggled so much. Now, I have what I need and can support her.”
As Tabuavou prepares for his first season with the Drua, his journey serves as a testament to hard work, sacrifice, and never forgetting where you come from.
