The Freedom Alliance party has been de-registered.

The political party made a request to the Fijian Elections Office for voluntary de-registration.

Registrar of Political Parties Mohammed Saneem said the party was de-registered after noting that majority of the office holders of the party had signed and submitted a written request for voluntary registration in accordance with section 19(7) of the Political Parties Registration Conduct Funding and Disclosures Act.

He said office holders of the party were reminded of section 20 of the Act which said that where a political party was deregistered under the Act, “no person shall summon a meeting of members or officers of the political party other than for the purposes of winding up the political party or for the purposes of challenging the deregistration of the political party”.

Under the Act, no person can attend or make a person attend a meeting in the capacity of a member or officer of the political party, publish a notice or advertisement relating to a meeting of the political party, invite persons to support the political party, make a contribution or loan to funds held or to be held by or for the benefit of the political party or accept a contribution or loan or give a guarantee in respect of such funds.

Freedom Alliance was formed by Jagath Karunaratne in May 2014 and registered as a political party in August the same year.
