FIJI Football Association president Rajesh Patel is urging fans to turn out in numbers and support the Fiji Women’s National Football Team (Kulas) as they begin their FIFA Women’s World Cup Oceania Qualifiers campaign this afternoon against New Caledonia at 4pm at 4R Stadium at Govind Park.
Expectations are high as the Kulas chase a historic place at the World Cup, and fans have been urged to turn up in numbers to support the national side in their opening match.
Patel, said free entry for all matches is aimed at encouraging families and supporters to rally behind the team.
“This is a big moment for women’s football in Fiji and we want the whole nation to be part of it.
“We have made entry free because we want families, young girls and football fans to come out and support the team,” Patel said.
Today’s match will also be marked by a special occasion, with the Commonwealth Games King’s Baton Relay visiting Ba ahead of kick-off.
The Baton will arrive at the Fiji FA Ba Academy at 2.15pm before proceeding to Govind Park at 2.30pm, giving supporters the opportunity to view and take photographs with the symbol of the Commonwealth Games celebrations.
Patel said hosting the Baton during an important international fixture was a proud moment for Fiji football.
“It is an honour for Fiji Football to be part of the King’s Baton Relay celebrations.
“To have the Baton present at an important Oceania qualifier not only adds prestige to the occasion but also highlights the unity of sport in our country.
“We encourage fans to come early, enjoy the moment and show their full support for our women’s national team.”
