FRCA recovers $4.8m in taxes

THE Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCA) assessed undeclared income of $18.9 million through the whistle-blower reports for the past three years.

With this, the authority recovered $4.8m in taxes where they rewarded the whistleblowers upon cash collection of omitted taxes.

This was revealed by the FRCA acting CEO Visvanath Das yesterday.

A whistleblower, who provides information or documents to the authority, contributing significantly to the success of the investigation by the authority is entitled to a monetary reward of about 10 per cent of the omitted tax revenue or duty.

Meanwhile, he said, FRCA now had put in place easy complaints policy whereby a customer or taxpayer who had a complaint could email and register the complaint which would be tracked for resolution.

“Whether it is a taxation or Customs issue, it will be acknowledged and depending on the complaint will be addressed and solved within the same working day (8am-4.30pm) or at the most three days’ time.

“Recorded complaints will be monitored for any ongoing trends by customer service champion and the customers will be updated of the progress.” He said they would only consider the complaint foreclosed, once the customer was satisfied with the outcome.

“We will also use this data to evaluate our complaints handling system, to identify recurring problems and how to improve on these and our service turnaround times,” he said.
