The country’s franchise shipping scheme will soon undergo changes to effectively address the problem of irregular inter-island shipping in the maritime islands.

The change may see the island of Rotuma included in Government’s shipping franchise scheme.

This was confirmed recently by Minister for Public Works and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau following concerns raised by islanders on Rotuma that irregular shipping had caused a lack of fuel and basic food items on the island.

Ro Filipe said he had met with Rotuma representative, Dr John Fatiaki, a week ago to discuss the issues.

“We discussed the whole situation in Rotuma,” he said.

“Not only issues regarding the generator but also alternatives including renewable energy, solar and the management of infrastructure including the roads.”

Ro Filipe said there were plans to include the Rotuma Island Council in decision-making with regards to franchise awardees.

“We’ve received requests to expand it and we’re looking at all those and working closely with the Rotuma Council on improving that.”

Government Shipping Franchise Scheme is a government funded initiative involving the movement of cargo and passengers between the maritime islands.

The Franchise Scheme enables connectivity and accessibility to markets, increasing economic activities and improving livelihoods.

This is essential for maritime connectivity and accessibility, especially to our uneconomical island routes.
