A bus operator on Taveuni is pleading with the Fiji Roads Authority to complete repair works on a road crossing because its deteriorating condition is a risk for the travelling public.

The director of Taveuni Buses Ltd, Prakash Sami, said the Nalele bridge was in a critical condition.

“Our drivers and passengers’ safety is not being considered by the authorities concerned with the road maintenance work,” Mr Sami said.

“The Nalele bridge has been in a critical condition for years and this could be a serious issue for the public.

“The bridge has been partly maintained and has not been completed.”

Mr Prakash said the exposed nails and screws on the surface of the bridge had damaged tyres.

“It has cost my company a lot of money fixing and buying new tyres,” he said.

“Apart from this, the road condition hasn’t been improved and it needs to be graded sooner rather than later so that bus services are not affected.”

In response, the Fiji Roads Authority said repair works on Nalele bridge were in progress.

“The majority of the repair work has been completed, but there has been unforeseen delays in obtaining the necessary timber supply,” the FRA said.

“As a result, there is still a six-meter section that needs to be completed.

“We anticipate to complete these works by the end of next week.

“On the road conditions in Taveuni, work commenced last week on the South coastal end from Wairiki to Soqulu.”

FRA said another team had started work at the North coastal end from Naselesele Seal end towards Lavena.

“These works are part of the November and December programs.”
