Fiji Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne says the Fiji Rugby Union’s 2025 Symposium is the foundation of the sport in Fiji.

Byrne said if people knew what the FRU was working towards, then they would also understand what was required at the highest levels of the game.

“I think the symposium is the foundation for our rugby in our country. I think if people know where we’re trying to get to, they understand what we’re looking for at the top end of the game,” Byrne said.

He made those comments on the sidelines of the FRU Symposium, which began yesterday at the upper hall of the Albert Park pavilion in Suva.

“One of the key messages is the sort of people we have at the top end of the game, about being trustworthy and those types of qualities in our people, we can start that at a young age and start looking at all our programs, unless they know what you’re thinking,” he added.

Reflecting on the progression of yesterday’s events, he described it as an opportunity to set the plan for what is needed at the top end of the game.

“Today was a great opportunity to lay out the foundations of what we look for at the top end of the game, because they’re very enthusiastic, they’re great coaches,” he said.

Byrne was one of four speakers that spoke at the symposium yesterday in a segment where keynote speakers from the union’s high-performance teams took to the podium.

Speakers in this segment included Mick Byrne for the Flying Fijians, Fijiana XV head coach Ioan Cunningham, Fiji Airways Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau and Fiji Airways FIjiana 7s head coach Richie Walker.

The symposium ends on Friday.
