Former stars combine in oldies event

THOSE who can remember the 2005 Rugby World Cup 7s in Hong Kong can recall the deadly combination of Semisi Naevo and Viliame Satala in the Fiji 7s team that went on lift the coveted Melrose Cup.

Ruthless in defence and destructive run, tearing oppositions’ defensive lines, the men known to many rugby pundits as the Man Mountain and the Stretcher were the go to players in the forwards.

The team led by legendary Waisale Serevi, was made up of some of Fiji’s best. And as commentator Keith Quinn puts it on the night of the final against the All Blacks that night …. “there is just too much weaponry in their armoury.”Fans going to watch the 40th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s this weekend will get to witness that same combination, but only this time in the Fiji Classic Golden Oldies combination. Laced with former national reps, the side is made up of former national stars Kini Radevta, former Naitasiri captain and 7s rep Senivalati Vunibola with 1997 Rugby World Cup 7s hero Samu Saumaisue making up the forwards.

The back line will be ignited by former Lautoka and national 15s speed merchant Manueli Tiko and guided by former Otago Highlanders winger and national rep Aisea Tuilevu.

1997 Melrose Cup winner Taniela Qauqau and former Suva fullback and kicking ace Ben Soso making up on what can be deemed a star-studded side.
