Former PM Qarase’s book launched

Prisoner 302, the autobiography of the late former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase was officially launched yesterday.

The launch date coincided with the 16th anniversary of the illegal takeover of his government in 2006 in a military coup led by then Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Voreqe Bainimarama.

The book contains details of Mr Qarase’s life journey and his account of when his government was overthrown by Mr Bainimarama in December 2006.

It also provides intimate personal accounts by the former PM on the ordeals and challenges he encountered throughout his trial and subsequent incarceration.

Speaking from California in the United States, the late PM’s son and namesake Laisenia Bale Qarase said the book would give readers a rare insight into his political and personal life.

He said Prisoner 302 would be a great educational book for aspiring politicians to learn from.

“If you are on the government side or Opposition, I believe there is something in his story that they can learn from to help them become better public servants that have the interest of the people of Fiji at heart,” he said.

Anyone interested in obtaining a copy can place their orders at the Methodist Bookshop, Epworth House, Suva, or pre-order the book on Amazon.

In an official Facebook post, an advisory was posted that copies were sold out less than three hours of the launch.

Those interested were encouraged to pre-pay for their copies at the Methodist Bookshop and await the next batch of orders to come through.
