Former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s bail application will take place this morning before the Chief Justice, Salesi Temo.
He is seeking courts approval to travel overseas for urgent medical treatment.
State prosecutors and officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) visited the Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka last week to verify the medical condition of Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) confirmed the visits were part of due diligence after receiving a formal request and affidavit from Mr Sayed-Khaiyum’s brother, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, seeking urgent overseas medical treatment.
“The ODPP is working closely with the police to verify the latest medical report and to confirm whether Mr Sayed-Khaiyum’s physical state aligns with the submitted documentation,” the ODPP had said in a statement.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum’s lawyer, Gul Fatima, last week expressed concern about her client’s health and constitutional rights, saying he suffers from ischaemic heart disease and a neurological condition requiring urgent overseas assessment.
“The doctors have warned of the risk of another stroke or cardiac event,” she said.
She also confirmed that court documents were filed on July 29, including a medical report and affidavit, and the case is now set for urgent review today.
