One hundred and fifty police constables, including 10 constables from Tuvalu, have joined the Fiji Police Force following a passing-out parade at the Nasova Grounds, Suva, yesterday.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu said the new officers would be deployed to fill existing vacancies across police stations and posts around the country.
He said the force’s priority was to increase manpower at stations and police posts to improve visibility and service delivery to the public.
“The 150 plus that are going out now, they will be filling up some of the vacancies that already exist within the various stations at this point in time,” Mr Tudravu said.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who officiated at the parade, reminded the officers of the importance of maintaining public trust, particularly in the current climate.
Mr Rabuka was also accorded a traditional ceremony, marking exactly 39 years since he last attended a police passing-out parade.
