SOME members of the historical Fiji soccer team that defeated Australia at Burkhurst Ground in 1977 were honoured by Fiji FA at Lautoka’s Churchill Park yesterday.
The players included skipper George Koi, Anand Sami, Hussein Shaheb, Vincent Mun Lal, John Monday, John Grey and Jimmy Okete were joined by John Lal’s daughter Cathy and Mike Tuilawa’s brother Rafael.
Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said these players had done wonders for the country and deserved to be honoured.
“These former players are legends and we thanked them for their contributions,” he said.
“They did the country proud defeating the Socceroos in Suva in 1977. Fiji FA arranged for these legends to be here and this is to thank them for their service.”
Meanwhile, Koi thanked Fiji FA for acknowledging their service.
He said the level of football had improved and commended the hard work put in by the officials.
