The Health Ministry has 17,500 COVID-19 test kits in stock, says permanent secretary Dr James Fong after claims there was a shortage of rapid diagnostic tests for COVID-19.
“We have 17,500 tests (kits) in stock which is currently undergoing distribution,” he said.
“Currently there is a global shortage that we are struggling with and at the same time there is a high utilisation demand that is challenging our distribution logistic capability.”
He says 50,000 test kits will arrive into the country soon to replenish existing stocks and negotiations are in progress for the purchase of more.
“Both issues will make it difficult for us to ensure tests are consistently available in all the ministry’s health facilities,” Dr Fong said.
He made the comment in response to concerns raised by an elderly man who said he wanted to get tested at the Lami Health Centre before taking the third booster shot – but was told the test kits were out of stock.
The 78-year-old pensioner, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was told to “buy my own from the pharmacy which cost $15”.
