Focus on welcome ceremony

PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and his wife Mary will be Team Fiji’s guests during the flag raising ceremony at the Games village in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this week.

And as this edition goes to press, preparations are on the roll in the Team Fiji camp for both the opening and flag raising ceremonies.

Team Fiji chef de mission Cathy Wong said the flag raising ceremony was when the Fiji flag would be officially raised in the Games village in recognition that Fiji was now in the village.

She said Fiji’s ambassador to the Federative Republic of Brazil Cama Tuiloma and his wife would also be present at the flag raising ceremony.

“So it’s just making sure that our logistic plans are in place to receive them when they come in to be our guest at the flag raising ceremony in the village.

“On that day we will also have the welcome ceremony by the ambassador of the Fijian community which will be held in town,” Wong said.

She said the details on the welcome ceremony were yet to be finalised.

“But at the next DRM (delegation registration) meeting), we’ll be briefed on the process and the procedure as far as the welcome ceremony is concerned and then I’ll be able to (provide) feedback to my athletes.”
