FNU Marketing Director resigns following staff complaints, confirms Education Minister

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has confirmed the resignation of Fiji National University director of Marketing and Communication Karen Lobendahn.

Mrs Lobendahn was the subject of a series of complaints from past and former FNU staff members resulting an inquiry by the university into the allegations of overworked and unfair treatment of staff.

A ministry statement confirmed Mr Radrodro held a meeting yesterday with Vice Chancellor Dr Unaisi Nabobo, the Chair of the FNU Council Semesa Karavaki and available Council members following complaints raised to his office by past and current FNU staff members.

“Honourable Radrodro discussed with the FNU Executives the various concerns raised which included allegations against the Director of Marketing and Communication at FNU, Mrs Karen Lobendahn, as well as other allegations over certain staff members at FNU’s School of Law and the delay in addressing issues raised to Management,” the statement said.

“Honourable Radrodro stated that it was incumbent on FNU to act in the best interest of students at all times, and not to allow issues to escalate to the point where the institution is brought to disrepute and his office has to become involved to resolve matters.

“The meeting resolved a number of issues which included the need to have proper disciplinary processes within the University, so that matters that arose were amicably resolved in a timely manner.

“The Minister also stated that the FNU Council in their report handed to his office yesterday, have confirmed that Mrs Karen Lobendahn has resigned with immediate effect from FNU.

“The remaining concerns which also include grievances against a senior Law lecturer is expected to be resolved urgently by FNU with a report expected back for the Ministry of Education.”

Mr Radrodro reminded FNU to always adhere to the rule of law in all its activities and decisions.

He added the Council and the Vice Chancellor were intricately tied to the functions of the FNU.

Mr Radrodro also reminded the Council of its fiduciary duties as stipulated under the FNU Act which is to oversee the efficient and effective functions of FNU for the purposes of preparing students for Fiji’s future workforce.
