The Fiji National University (FNU) has expressed “profound sadness” over the discovery of a baby boy inside a toilet at its Natabua campus.
FNU said they are fully cooperating with the Fiji Police Force and relevant authorities as investigations continue.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Nii-K Plange described the incident as “heartbreaking and deeply emotional.”
“Our hearts go out to the innocent child and mother, and we pray they both receive the love, care, and protection they deserve,” Professor Plange said.
“We are gravely concerned for the mother and hope she is safe. We want her to know she is not alone, and we are here to provide the assistance she requires should she wish.”
“We are incredibly thankful to those who acted quickly and compassionately, embodying the spirit of duty of care that FNU upholds.”
Professor Plange added as a university, FNU is reflecting on how much more thry can do to support their students.
“No one should feel alone in facing difficult life circumstances,” he said.
FNU is urging students to utilise the free, confidential counselling and health services available across all campuses, including UniClinic, or to confide in trusted staff members.
“To any student who may be struggling—emotionally, mentally, or personally—please know that support is here for you,” Professor Plange said.
“Our counsellors and UniClinic staff are trained to listen, care, and guide you without judgement.”
