THE Fiji National University is working with the Ministry of Education to revive a franchise model that will allow vocational training in secondary schools.

FNU Technical and Vocational Education and Training pro vice-chancellor Dr Isimeli Tagicakiverata said discussions were ongoing and the university was awaiting approval.

He said the franchise models had worked in the past under the former Fiji Institute of Technology.

“If high schools in Labasa already offer vocational programs, we can deliver full Certificate III training right there.

“Students wouldn’t need to leave home.”

He told a public consultation in Labasa the franchise model would only work if schools had qualified teachers and proper workshops.

“Those are the key requirements.”

Dr Tagicakiverata said the franchise model was shelved in 2015 by the previous government when a new program was introduced.
