A NEW plan by the Fiji National University (FNU) and the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) could soon make it easier for people in Fiji to become certified rugby referees.
This idea came after talks between FNU’s Natabua Campus Head Perry Gabriel, Physical Education Assistant Lecturer Varanisese Tagimaucia, Assistant Lecturer and Natabua Rugby Club Coach Josaia Tulomana, and FRU’s National Rugby Referee Manager, James Bolabiu.
Gabriel said that FNU’s teacher-training campuses are great places to run such programmes because they have good facilities and reach future teachers across the country.
Bolabiu explained that FRU wants to improve the level of refereeing in Fiji by offering proper training.
He said that FNU’s Natabua and Nasinu campuses are ideal for this because of their facilities, student population, and internet access.
“The programme structure will feature a six-week workshop series, with two-hour sessions per week leading up to the rugby season. It will include a blend of practical sessions, such as on-field training, and virtual seminars featuring global referees who will share their expertise and inspire participants.
“The focus will be on refereeing as a professional skill and a potential income stream for graduates,” Bolabiu said.
With FNU’s support and Fiji’s strong rugby background, this programme could help lift the standard of rugby and open new career paths for young people in the country.
