THE Fiji National Rugby League officially launched the 2026 Vodafone Fiji Cup yesterday, with 41 teams set to contest one of the country’s premier rugby league competitions.

The championship will feature 30 men’s teams and 11 women’s sides, making it one of the largest editions in recent years. The addition of four new clubs further highlights the growing interest in rugby league across the country.

Speaking at the launch, FNRL Chairman Rajesh Singh said the Vodafone Fiji Cup remains one of the most important competitions on the local rugby calendar and continues to play a vital role in the sport’s development.

“The Vodafone Fiji Cup is the premier domestic competition for rugby league in Fiji, and it provides clubs and players with the opportunity to compete at a high level,” Singh said.

He said the growing number of teams reflects strong commitment from clubs, administrators, and volunteers working to expand the game nationwide.

“The growth we are seeing is encouraging. More communities are embracing rugby league, and that is strengthening competition.”

Singh said the tournament is not only about crowning champions but also about giving players a platform to showcase their talent and push for higher honours.

“The competition provides an important platform for players to develop and demonstrate their abilities in a competitive environment.”

According to Singh, the Vodafone Fiji Cup plays a vital role in the player development pathway, linking grassroots rugby league to representative teams and national selection.

“We are creating opportunities for players to move through the system, from grassroots rugby league to representative teams and eventually national selection. Competitions like the Vodafone Fiji Cup are essential to that process.”

He added that the standard of domestic rugby league continues to improve each season as clubs place greater emphasis on preparation and development.

“We expect another highly competitive competition this year. The standard of rugby league in Fiji continues to rise, and that is important for the future of the sport.”

With the launch complete, attention now turns to the opening rounds, which begin tomorrow, with clubs preparing to begin their campaign in what promises to be another competitive Vodafone Fiji Cup season.
