The Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) is committed to upgrading staff members’ skills in disaster risk reduction, says director Terry Atalifo.

He said upgrading and continuous improvement were a part of their work. “At the same time, we’re not the only player here, we need support in this work of other key players as well,” he said during a National Climate Outlook Forum last week.

“So it’s important because, you know, the weather has changed a lot over the years. Extreme events are something that we are seeing.”

Mr Atalifo said there were instances of flooding and coastal inundation almost every year.

“Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is to work very closely with the disaster managers and all the players working in the DRR space.”

He said the National Climate Outlook Forum was a way for FMS staff to get together with various other stakeholders to exchange ideas and knowledge about ways to build capacity and enhance service delivery.

Mr Atalifo said the forum was also a way to understand the various resources the organisation had at its disposal and ways it could be utilised properly.
