The Fiji Labour Party will announce their candidates for the 2022 General Election next month. Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said they had been going through applications from across the country.

“As far as the Fiji Labour Party is concerned, we are at this stage going through the applications that we have received from the various districts from people who are aspiring to contest the elections under the Labour ticket,” he said.

“We have to finalise this process and announce our candidates by June, but in between we’ve got people who’ve applied and we call them prospective candidates.

“They will be campaigning for the party in the interim.”

He said the party was preparing for the election that could happen between July, 2022 and January, 2023.

“The date of the election is not known because the Government has not yet come out and said this is the day when the country will go to the polls.

“But it can happen anytime between July, if they want an early election or until January next year, if they want to run their full term.

“So we’ve got to be ready for an election from July onwards. Which doesn’t give us much time really, this is end of April.

“So there’s a lot of work to be done and we need to get down to action as quickly as possible.”
