A flood warning is now in force for low-lying and flood-prone areas adjacent to and downstream of the Nakauvadra River in Rakiraki Town, Naseyani along the Yaqara River, and Tavua at Nasivi and the Tavua Town Bridge.
A flood alert has also been issued for the flood plains of the Ba River.
According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, Tropical Cyclone URMIL, a Category 2 system, lies to the west-southwest of Kadavu and continues to track southeastwards.
Active rainbands associated with the cyclone, combined with strong northwesterly winds, are affecting much of the Fiji group.
Weather officials warn that these conditions are increasing the risk of river flooding (fluvial flooding), particularly in river catchments already saturated by persistent rainfall.
Todays high tide: 2.23 metres is at 4:43pm in Lautoka and in Suva high tide is at 5:56pm.
Authorities say the combination of heavy rainfall, rising river levels and elevated tides could further worsen flooding impacts in affected areas.
Based on near real-time river level data and rainfall forecast information, water levels in Rakiraki, Tavua and Ba are reported to be steadily increasing above alert and warning thresholds.
Residents in affected and downstream communities are urged to remain vigilant, avoid river crossings and flooded roads, and continue following all official weather warnings and advisories as the situation develops.
