Less than a month after recovering from flood damage, Salaseini Naivua and her family have once again been forced to evacuate their home in Olosara, Sigatoka, following severe weather linked to Tropical Cyclone Vaianu.

Ms Naivua and her family are among 25 people currently taking shelter at the NDMO Evacuation Centre at Korotogo Andhra Sangam Primary School. The family fled their home in Veiyakayaka on Tuesday as rising waters from a nearby creek threatened their safety.

“We live near a creek and whenever there is heavy rainfall, our house gets flooded,” she said.

“That is why we decided to leave and take shelter.”

The Cuvu villager said six family members evacuated as water levels rapidly increased, leaving little time to secure their belongings.

The latest flooding comes just weeks after a similar event in March destroyed household items and damaged land the family had recently purchased.

“We are still recovering from that flood.

“Now we are facing another one.”

Ms Naivua is urging authorities to address ongoing drainage issues in their area.
