Five police officers are expected to appear at the Suva Magistrates Court today, charged in connection with the alleged assault and extortion of a Nasinu businessman.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has sanctioned the charges following an investigation into the incident.
All five officers face one count each of assault causing actual bodily harm.
In addition, four of the officers have been charged with theft and wrongful confinement, while two face an extra charge of possession of property suspected of being proceeds of crime.
The Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, reaffirmed the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to transparency and accountability in handling internal misconduct.
He said Fiji Police maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards corrupt practices.
All five officers have been placed on interdiction pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
