FIJIANA XV captain Alfreda Fisher is backing her side’s growing combination ahead of their opening clash against Tonga in the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship at Churchill Park today.

Fisher said the blend of new and experienced players had lifted the team’s confidence heading into the match.

“We’re excited because we have some new players and also old players, and they are blending well together,” she said.

With several fresh faces included in the squad, the skipper believes the team is building strong connections both on and off the field.

She added that key focus areas during preparation have been tightening their defence and improving physicality.

“We need to improve on our line defence, our connections, and winning collisions,” Fisher said.

Leading the national side is a role she takes in stride.

“Nothing new, but I’m excited to lead our girls in this tournament,” she said.

Fijiana heads into the match looking to set the tone early in the competition, with home support expected to play a big part in their performance.

Meanwhile, interim head coach Mike Legge acknowledged that preparations were disrupted by last week’s cyclone but praised the team’s response.

“We had a lot of distractions last week with facility closures, but we came in on Saturday and have been able to train ever since.

“It’s been okay, and it can be better.”

He also highlighted the importance of developing depth within the squad, with players earning selection through local competitions.

“Our squad features 12 players from the Marama Cup alongside our usual Fijiana XV players,” he said. “It’s massive for our development and you will see a few debuts against Tonga.”

Legge expects a physical encounter against the Tongans but remains confident his side can deliver.

“It’s important for us to maintain momentum. We expect a physical game, and for us it’s about sticking to our processes and what we believe will give us the win,” he said.

The match kicks off at 4.30pm.
