It took two years of steady work and commitment to lift the Ablaze Hearts netball club into the Super Grade of the Suva Netball Association competition.

This is the first time the club has reached the Super Grade, where only the top eight teams from the knockout rounds earn a place.

For coach and president Filomena Korovulavula, it is a milestone that shows how far her young players have come.

“This is our first year in the Super Grade, which is the main grade where only the top eight teams compete,” Korovulavula said.

“I’ve been guiding these girls since they were nine years old. Now they are in secondary school, and it’s exciting to see them step up.”

Ablaze Hearts have entered 15 teams this season, with players taking part across all levels, from beginner divisions to elite competition.

“They are a little nervous, but this is a valuable learning experience,” she said. “Next year will be an even better year for us because this season is building their confidence.”

Last year, the club finished as runners-up in the Suva Netball club competition.

This season, Korovulavula is aiming higher and wants to see her teams win titles.

“Lomaiviti Netball is always the top side, but I believe two or three of my grades have a good chance to become champions,” she said.

The club fields three teams in the Angels Grade, four in the Roses Grade, two in the Princess Grade, two Development Grade teams, and teams in the Premier, Super, Mix, and Queens Grades.

“For me, development is the most important part, especially starting at a young age,” Korovulavula said.

“It takes time and patience, but it’s worth it when you see them grow.”
