New players and first-time experiences didn’t define the Labasa Sangam College under-15 netball team, as they participated in the first day of the CREST Fiji Secondary Schools Netball finals, held at the National Netball Centre in Laucala yesterday.

In their opening match, the team faced a tough challenge and ended with a 13-13 draw against Penang Sangam High School, despite this the players showed determination and spirit on the court.

The Netball Finals brought together over 6,090 students from 61 schools nationwide, following an extensive campaign involving 15 zones and six regional rallies. The three-day event aimed to showcase the talents of young netballers across Fiji.

Coach Kelera Sadrugu reflected on the team’s journey, highlighting the changes from the previous year.

“This year we brought only one U15 grade, this is my third-year teaching in Labasa, so in the years, I have brought three teams that came and compete in the national competition,” said Sadrugu.”

“This year, in our U15 team we have abit of changes as only three players from last year are in this year’s team, the rest are new to the competition, and this is also their first time competing in the nationals, which is a great opportunity for them.”

She reiterated the need for improvement throughout the competition, recognising the challenges that come with facing tough teams from different schools.

“First match is always important, we managed to get a draw 13-13, the girls looked nervous because it’s their first match, so will need to improve, as this is only the first day of competition.

Despite facing financial constraints and training difficulties due to the lack of a proper netball court in Labasa, the team remained grateful for the support of parents and sponsors.

Meanwhile in other results, U15 Bhawani Dayal Arya College 6-14 Yat Sean College, Swami Vivekananda College open girls 15-9 Wainibuka, SVS open boys 20-13 St Thomas, U15 Holy Cross College 14-8 Nakasi High School, U14 HCC 14-9 Nabua Secondary.
