IT was his first Munro Leys Suva Marathon, and the anticipation is palpable, for Brian Thaker, a 41-year-old from Brisbane, Australia.

Stepping foot in the country for the first time, Thaker joined the ranks of over 700 registered runners in the competition.

The event boasted an array of race categories, including the challenging Full Marathon spanning 42km, the Half Marathon covering 21.1km, the Rexona Road Race at 10.55km, and the Rexona Team Marathon at 10.55km.

Expressing his excitement, Thaker shared, “This marks my maiden voyage to Fiji and my debut Marathon.

“I’m really excited, I have done few Marathons in Australia, but this is going to be a challenge with the warm climate and the humidity, so ill see how it goes,” said Thaker.

“Running has been a cherished part of my life for over a decade, serving as both a leisurely pursuit and a means of maintaining my fitness regime.

“It’s more than just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle that brings me immense joy.”

Thaker arrived in Fiji with the intention of savoring the local experience and putting forth his best performance in the race.

“I was born and raised in Australia, so I’m here in Fiji to visit my partners family, so when I heard about the race, I was really excited and had to compete in it.

“I always love running for a long time, it’s a great opportunity to meet new people as well, and you get to learn a lot of things.

Acknowledging the running talent in Fiji, Thaker views his participation as an opportunity to test his mettle alongside the country’s skilled runners.

“I heard there is a lot of great runners in Fiji, so it is a great opportunity for me to be apart of this event and do my best.”

To the youth, Thaker offered words of encouragement, highlighting the sport as a gateway to showcasing talent, fostering fitness, and embracing a healthy lifestyle.

“I urge the younger generation to embrace running as an avenue for self-expression and physical well-being.

“It is a platform to display your prowess, cultivate discipline, and engage with a supportive community that shares your passion.”

Co-founder of the Suva Marathon, Marita Manley, also expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming event.

“We are thrilled about the competition and urge all, whether registered or not, to join us in cheering on the runners.

“In addition to the excitement of the race, we are raising funds for the Salvation Army, and we anticipate a strong turnout. Wishing all participants the best of luck.”

The Suva Marathon will commence at 6am today.
