Fiji has recorded its first road fatality for 2026 following a motor vehicle accident near the Nasue Settlement in Vunilagi, Savusavu, yesterday.
Police said a woman in her 60s from Buca Village died after the vehicle she was travelling in veered onto the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming vehicle.
The victim was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man, which was involved in a crash with another vehicle driven by a 51-year-old man.
The impact also injured two children aged six and 15 who were travelling in the same vehicle.
All three were rushed to Savusavu Hospital, where the woman later died from her injuries.
Police said the driver of the vehicle the woman was travelling in will be questioned as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The national road death toll now stands at one, compared to zero for the same period last year.
