Young Team Fiji discus thrower Glenn Finau is competing in the Pacific Mini Games for the first time and has welcomed his selection into the team.

Finau, a student of Suva Grammar School explained he made it through after a set of trials where he finished below what was expected in the trial’s first and second rounds.

“I was pretty excited, a lot of hard work. I had a few setbacks during the first and second trial; first and second (trials) I didn’t qualify, not really good,” Finau recalled.

“But then the last one went really well thanks to my coach, Coach Drew and Coach Deborah.”

He credited the coaching duo for their assistance in preparing him for the Mini Games, which he said was proceeding well.

As a Suva Grammar student who had to devote time to the school’s cadet corp programme like the rest of his schoolmates, it affected his training schedule as well.

“The preparations have been going well but after the Cokes (Fiji Finals), we had to do cadets and so we haven’t trained for one week or two weeks,” he mentioned.

When he could not achieve the required results in the first two trials organised by Athletics Fiji, he didn’t lose sight of the end goal and narrowed his attention towards two important areas.

“Those two were technique wise and also with the weight training, trying to manage them like from the middle week and the first week and the last week, so (I) had some troubles,” he highlighted.

While there were challenges faced by Finau during his preparation, he has credited the power of prayer as a key element in how he has overcome them.

“First, God through prayer every day, to keep praying before food. Pray even after the training, pray before training,’ he stressed.

“Pray always; always pray with the Lord first to help you during training and He will help you.”

Meanwhile, he will be competing in the discus events alongside other fellow Team Fiji discus throwers such as Loata Lewageena and Tyrone Ali.
