The endemic nanai cicadas have emerged in Navosa after eight years underground, REDD + Fiji has reported on its social media page.

In a remarkable natural spectacle, hundreds of nanai cicadas, a species found only in Fiji, are emerging from the earth in the hills of Navosa, marking the end of an eight-year underground life cycle.

Known for their deep, resonant call and unmistakable presence during their brief time above ground, the nanai is more than just an insect, said REDD + Fiji.

“An incredible sight in Navosa! The Nanai, a cicada species found only in Fiji, is emerging after spending a full eight years underground!.”

“Known for its powerful, resonant call, this endemic insect is more than just a bug; it’s a national treasure.”

“This natural event is a beautiful reminder of the rich, untouched ecosystems that make Fiji so special. Who else is lucky enough to witness this?”
