Grace Jale, the first Fijian woman to play in a FIFA Women’s World Cup, was in the country this week for a well-deserved break after the 2023 tournament ended earlier this month.
The Football Fern player holidayed at the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa took time to engage at nearby communities during her break.
Jale said her visit was an opportunity to reconnect with her Fijian roots.
“Although it was short, this is the best trip I have ever been on,” she said.
“Though I was born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, I have always felt such a strong connection to the islands of Fiji.”
Jale’s father’s side of the family still resides here, and although it was her first visit “it feels like a home away from home”.
“I will treasure the memories and connections I made on this trip forever,” she said.
Her time in Suva with the national U16 women’s team was also an opportunity to give back to the young women of Fiji.
“What makes Fiji so special is its people and, in particular for me, the young girls of the U16 team who were a true delight to train with.
“Their smiles and laughter throughout the session were incredible. They are so positive and, of course, very talented.”
Fiji U16 women’s coach Angeline Chua said it was a unique experience for the team.
“For many of the girls, this is the first time they’ve met and trained with a female professional footballer,” she said.
“This experience has bolstered their belief in building a career on their football dreams.
“Seeing how far Grace has come has taught them that they too can excel in a sport they’re passionate about.”
Jale’s holiday was made possible through a partnership with Tourism Fiji.
