Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s player Sakiusa Siqila has travelled to many parts of the world since donning the white national jumper, however the visit to the village of Soso on the island of Naviti in the Yasawa Group two weeks ago was a major highlight for him.

It marked his first visit to the island and the Yasawas, after travelling to other parts of the country to compete in major national 7s tournaments.

He and teammate Josese Batirerega took time from their busy schedules to join the contingent from the Fiji National Association of Sport and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) to head to Soso yesterday.

“I really enjoyed the visit to Soso today with the FASANOC teamv and it was a good experience too and one I will never forget as well,” Siqila said.

Siqila, Batirerega, FASANOC staff, government officials and a journalist from The Fiji Times were transported to the island by the Water Police vessel MV Liga ni Lawa, braving moderate to rough seas to get across from Port Denarau.

Meanwhile, students of Ratu Apenisa Memorial School in Soso, Naviti, Yasawa had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hold the Commonwealth Games baton when it reached their school yesterday.

The school, located in Soso, is mostly made up of primary school students in years one to four and those in early childhood education.

Baton carriers such as national Fiji sevens reps Sakiusa Siqila and Josese Batirerega along with Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission to the Commonwealth Games, Ajay Ballu, were present there to hand out educational materials such as books and stationeries.

The students also had a chance to meet the two sevens stars, meeting the duo who they would only see on television screens in the comfort of their own homes.
