Firewalking ends 10-day prayers

IT was a test of faith for Hindus yesterday as they ended 10 days of prayers with a firewalking ceremony.

Fifty-five devotees participated in the annual firewalking ceremony at the Sangam temple at Howell Rd in Samabula yesterday afternoon.

Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam’s Suva branch president Krishna Sami Goundar said prayers at the temple started on August 14.

“It was a 10-day program and everything went well. The weather was also good,” he said.

Devotees first went to Suva Point after midday yesterday for the final prayers where they were pierced with iron needles.

They then walked back to the temple, where they walked on hot embers as a test of their faith at 3pm.
