FIJI’S 22nd fire station opened in Navua last week, which Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa described as an essential entity.
However, some residents have criticised the need for the fire station, especially as the town’s hospital remains dilapidated.
But Mr Nalumisa said a fire station was a vital facility in any set-up, whether it was a community, town or city.
“It’s very important that we have some facility that’ll protect not only the properties but also attend to rescue operations that do happen in the vicinity, around this facility,” he said.
“All in all, I think it’s good because it protects the community from such disasters like fire. And if there happens to be an accident or even in terms of disasters and flooding, people are here. These fire officers, firefighters are there to support the whole community.”
