A family in Nukubuco settlement along Khalsa Rd in Nasinu was left homeless after their double storey house was destroyed in a fire last weekend.
Their neighbour, Mereia Wati, told this newspaper that the fire started after 3pm on Saturday.
She said her neighbour was fortunate enough to have escaped the fire.
“It was a very big fire and they were very lucky to have escaped it,” she said.
Ms Wati said the only things her neighbours saved were the clothes on their back.
She said the fire engulfed the six-bedroom house within minutes.
She said it was still unclear how the fire began.
She recalled that some children living in the house had alerted the homeowner that the black smoke was coming from the bottom flat.
“We are just thankful that they are safe and that no one was injured.”
