Finance expert joins Fiji Rugby

The Fiji Rakavi Football Union has appointed Pita Tutuvalu Waqanivalu as its new chief financial officer, with his tenure set to begin in February 2026.

In a media statement, FRU stated Waqanivalu brings more than a decade of senior leadership experience in financial management across both public and private sector institutions.

He has previously held senior roles including Manager Finance at the Public Rental Board and the iTaukei Land Trust Board and also served as Acting Chief Financial Officer at the Water Authority of Fiji.

FRU said his career is marked by a strong track record in improving financial performance, strengthening governance frameworks and guiding organisations through complex operational and growth environments.

Waqanivalu also brings international experience, having worked across the Pacific and globally, including in Jamaica, Singapore, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Tonga and Samoa.

A chartered accountant and associate member of CPA Australia, he is also affiliated with the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Institute of Internal Auditors.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Commerce from the University of the South Pacific, supported by postgraduate certifications and executive training in financial management, corporate governance and project leadership.

In his new role, Mr Waqanivalu will oversee FRU’s financial operations, strengthen governance systems, drive sustainable growth and ensure fiscal discipline in line with the union’s long-term strategic objectives.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Waqanivalu said he was honoured to join Fiji Rugby at an exciting time for the sport.

“With a strong commitment to prudent financial management, I look forward to contributing my experience and values to help foster sustainable and resilient growth that supports the development of rugby at all levels in Fiji,” he said.

Fiji Rugby chief executive officer Koli Sewabu said the appointment reflectedd FRU’s commitment to strengthening financial governance and strategic planning.
