The 2025 Skipper Cup quarter-finals delivered a weekend of fierce competition, emotion, and upsets as Naitasiri, Nadi, Tailevu, and Malolo booked their places in the semi-finals following four intense and dramatic encounters.
At Lawaqa Park, Malolo produced the biggest shock of the tournament, edging defending champions Nadroga 23-22 in a pulsating clash.
The maritime side, returning to the competition after a long absence, displayed tremendous heart and composure.
Tries from Aminiasi Natuiyaga, Simeli Karacia, and Isaia Rugu, along with accurate kicking from Esala Nalobo, secured the win.
The victory was a bittersweet one for Malolo, who dedicated their performance to their late technical advisor, Esala Nauga. Team captain Imanueli Bari said the win was achieved through determination and unity, fulfilling a goal the team had set at the start of the season.
Naitasiri maintained their strong form with a 32-18 victory over Ba in Sigatoka.
Flying Fijians forward Kavaia Tagivetaua and winger Sakaraia Soqonakalou starred as the Highlanders controlled the game from start to finish. Fullback Senijiale Qiokata’s precision with the boot helped seal their semi-final place, where they will now face Tailevu.
In Lautoka, Tailevu stamped their authority with a convincing 39-18 win over the home side at Churchill Park.
Guided by Swire Shipping Fijian Drua halfback Simione Kuruvoli, Tailevu dominated possession and territory through sharp kicking and relentless pressure.
President Joe Rodan said the team’s goal had always been to win the Skipper Cup, and their performance showed they have what it takes.
Tries from Vunaki Waqanibau, Mika Delana, Saula Tui, Kuruvoli, and Maika Selema highlighted their attacking prowess.
The final quarter-final in Lautoka saw Nadi mount a thrilling comeback to defeat FMF Suva 34-29. Trailing 20-15 at halftime, Nadi turned the tide through tries from Sailosi Vukalokalo, Lemeki Bolayaca, and Tomasi Nawaqa.
