Tomorrow is the last day for Fijians to help shape national recommendations for children living with disabilities, as submissions to a study by the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) close tomorrow.

The Commission’s nationwide study, which began in early February, aims to capture the lived experiences of children with disabilities and identify gaps in support systems across the country.

Findings from the study are expected to inform evidence-based recommendations to strengthen laws, policies, and services.

FHRADC Director Loukinikini Lewaravu is urging members of the public to come forward before the April 9, 2026 deadline, stressing that participation is critical to ensuring the study reflects the realities faced by families and communities.

“This national study, the first of its kind in Fiji seeks to capture the lived realities of children with disabilities and identify the barriers that continue to limit their full inclusion, safety, and dignity,” Ms Lewaravu said.

“Over recent months, the Commission has engaged directly with communities through talanoa-style consultations and interviews conducted in both iTaukei and Fiji Hindi.

“These engagements have provided important insights.”

She noted that while valuable insights have already been collected, the Commission is encouraging broader participation, particularly from families, caregivers, teachers, and service providers whose experiences are often underrepresented.

“Submissions will directly inform evidence-based recommendations to strengthen laws, policies, and services for children with disabilities in Fiji.”
