Fiji’s 2024 climate summary confirms rising temperatures: Met Office

The Fiji Meteorological Service’s 2024 Annual Climate Summary has confirmed a continued warming trend across the country, with both maximum and minimum temperatures showing statistically significant increases over the long term.

According to the report, Fiji’s national average maximum air temperature has increased by 1.2°C between 1959 and 2024, while the average minimum temperature has risen by 1.0°C over the same period.

Both increases were described as statistically significant at the 95% confidence level, highlighting the long-term impact of climate change on Fiji’s environment.

Keiyasi recorded the highest annual mean maximum air temperature in 2024 at 34.5°C, followed by RKS Lodoni (32.5°C), Viwa (32.0°C), Yaqara (31.5°C), and Lautoka Mill (31.1°C).

On the other end of the scale, the coolest annual mean maximum temperatures were logged at Monasavu (24.8°C) and Nadarivatu (27.7°C), with other relatively cooler locations including Ono-i-Lau (28.8°C), Vunisea (29.1°C), and Vanuabalavu (29.3°C).

The hottest day of the year was on February 26, when RKS Lodoni reached a scorching 37.8°C.

In terms of night-time temperatures, Viwa experienced the warmest annual average minimum temperature at 25.1°C, followed by RKS Lodoni (24.9°C), Levuka (24.3°C), Laucala Bay in Suva (24.0°C), and Yaqara (23.7°C).

The coolest nights on average were recorded at Monasavu, which had an annual minimum temperature of 18.7°C, followed by Nadarivatu (20.2°C), Korolevu (21.3°C), and Sigatoka (21.4°C).

The coldest daily minimum temperature for the year was 10.9°C, recorded at Nadarivatu on August 7.

Monasavu recorded a low of 12.6°C on May 11.
