A senior Fijian veteran who was among the first 212 Fijians to enlist in the British Army in 1961 was honoured during a recent visit organised under a British Army Legion initiative.

According to a post shared on social media by the Royal British Legion, the visit was made to former Royal Engineers sapper Jona “Scouse” Tunidau, now 83, at his home in Vatuwaqa.

The visit was carried out under the 212 Flames initiative, a group made up of children of the original 212 Fijian soldiers who served in the British Army and which operates under the Royal British Legion umbrella.

Mr Tunidau is now living a quiet life with his daughter and her family.

While his mobility and eyesight remain strong, the post noted that his mental faculties have declined.

He continues to receive care and support from his close family.

The British Army Legion said the visit was a reminder of the enduring legacy of Fiji’s early military contribution and the importance of honouring and supporting veterans and their families.
