FIJIANS need to be smart in managing their money and expenses, Salaseini Radini of Saumakia Village, Naitasiri, warns.
She believes the ongoing fuel crisis will not be easy for ordinary people across the country.
“Sometimes we can afford to buy kerosene and gas, and sometimes we can’t,” she said.
“At times, we have to buy kerosene and gas to meet our daily needs at home, like cooking food for our family.
“There are seven of us staying at home, and my son is the only one working. This part-time job at the market helps with income for our survival.”
A market vendor for 15 years, Ms Radini said she will manage her expenses by using public transportation to get to the market daily.
“I can manage with the changes to daily transportation. I will just sell from home and supply fruits and vegetables to companies that are willing to buy from us,” she explained.
Ms Radini encouraged Fijians to think wisely during this challenging period.
“All of this goes back to how we use our money. If we don’t manage it well, we won’t be able to purchase food to put on our table.
“It’s not going to be easy, but if we look back at the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, I am sure that we can manage. We just need to be smart in handling our finances. Even though many are employed, some people misuse money on grog, alcohol, and other social activities. We need to think of our children and grandchildren.”
Lautoka market vendor, Subar Mani, shared similar concerns following the Phase One National Fuel Emergency Action Plan announcement by Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya on Friday.
“With the global fuel crisis, the price is bound to increase,” he said.
The retired professional photographer said fuel remains a priority for every Fijian household.
“I have been a market vendor for 11 years, and this is my pastime at the market. My children are all grown up and live in Suva.
“People should not misuse their vehicles. Don’t make it a daily routine running here and there, that is one way we can save money and save fuel.”
