A lawyer with links to Fiji and a Fijian have been named as members of the Alameddine crime family who were targets in a shooting incident in Sydney.
The Alameddine crime family head, Dawood Zakaria, was the main target and remains in hospital after being shot inside a car on Church Street, Granville just after 5pm on Sunday.
Also injured was Sydney lawyer Sylvan Singh, who works at a nearby Parramatta law firm and was admitted as a solicitor in 2023.
Also in the vehicle was Levi Vitukawalu, who has been named as bodyguard.
Their Toyota Hilux was sitting at a red light under the M4 overpass when the gunman opened fire.
Mr Zakaria is the brother of notorious underworld figure Masood Zakaria, who was extradited from Türkiye last year to face charges stemming from the attempted hit on rival Ibrahem Hamze in 2021.
The charges relate to two failed attempts on Hamze’s life at the height of the gangland war between his and the Alameddine families in Western Sydney.
The majority of the Alameddine crime network remain in Lebanon, where leader Rafat Alameddine is also wanted on a warrant for charges relating to the same conspiracy to kill Hamze.
Mr Zakaria and Mr Singh were among four people in the car at the time when the gunman opened fire.
Mr Zakaria is not expected to survive his injuries, Criminal Groups Squad Commander Superintendent Jason Box said on Monday morning.
It is the second time he has been shot at this year.
Police pointed to a number of “conflicts” in the lead up to the shooting, including a February incident at Brighton-Le-Sands where Mr Zakaria was shot at.
With the criminal connections of the people in the car with Mr Zakaria at the time, detectives are not ruling out whether more than one of them were the attacker’s intended target.
The two other occupants in the car — Samimjan Azari, 26, and Levi Vitukawalu, 28 — were unharmed in the shooting but appeared in Parramatta local court on Monday charged with firearm offences.
