Hindu devotees across the country yesterday celebrated Holi after a lapse of two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a government statement, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said Holi had strengthened people’s faith that the goodness of joy, hope and unity would always triumph over adversity in an era that felt defined by crisis after crisis.

“I wish everyone celebrating Holi in Fiji and around the world a wonderful festival of life, love, and colours,” he said.

Sanjay Sharma, 45, of Sakoca in Tacirua smeared colours on family members and friends in his community to celebrate the occasion.

“We are so happy to celebrate Holi again after two years,” he said.

“It has been two years now since we last celebrated Holi because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As we celebrate Holi, we pray for protection and healing for people devastated by the pandemic and we also pray for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine.”

Holi is celebrated in Phagun, the 12th month of the Hindu calendar.
