AUSTRALIAN Football League Fiji women’s Vonu team finished fifth in the AFL International Cup 2017 after beating Papua New Guinea 37-7 in Melbourne, Australia yesterday.
The Fiji men’s Tribe team finished eighth in the competition after going down to Canada 24-21.
“The final round of matches saw Fiji Vonu claim fifth place in the AFL International Cup 2017, with Fiji Tribe claiming eighth place, after a hard-fought few weeks of football in Melbourne,” AFL Fiji Facebook page reported.
“In their final encounter, Fiji Tribe dominated much of the play against Canada, but again fell short when it came to converting their chances in the forward half.
“The midfield group proved dominant for much of the tournament, and much of the group displayed tremendous skill and athleticism, but a focus on structures, forward entries, and team defence will likely see the team improve further.
“Fiji Vonu claimed ascendancy over Papua New Guinea early in the contest and did not give them much room to breathe throughout the match. It has been a terrific competition for the girls, pushing the world’s best teams right to the brink and absolutely outclassing others,” the page reported
“The best players of the tournament were chosen for the AFL International Cup World team last night with Fiji Vonu having a strong representation of three players, Matelita Tuilevuka, Litia Matanisigadrau and Salote Matakibau, while Fiji Tribe had the one in Jiuta Vateitei.”
Meanwhile, forward phenom Sally Fong claimed the leading goal kicker trophy for the women’s competition with eight goals from her three preliminary matches.
