The Vodafone Fijiana XV side is ready and raring to go as they prepare to take on Tonga in the opening match of the Oceania Rugby Women’s XV Championship this Friday at 2pm at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
Head coach Ioan Cunningham says the team has been building well in camp and is eager to put recent lessons into practice.
“Our preparation has been going well. We are excited by the opportunity that’s coming up for the Oceania competition.
“Obviously, taking the learnings from the Wallaroos match and hopefully looking for an improved performance against Tonga this week,” Cunningham said.
The Fijiana XV were recently tested against a strong Australian Wallaroos side and Cunningham said that match was an eye-opener for the team, prompting some adjustments in both game strategy and mindset.
One of the key positives for the squad heading into the tournament is the inclusion of six new players, bringing fresh energy and healthy competition within the team.
“We’ve had a great opportunity being in camp together this past week. Bringing in some fresh faces adds energy to the group, as well as increased competition. That competition for places is important to drive standards.
“We’re excited by the six new players that have come in. Giving them the opportunity to put their hands up not only for the Oceania Championship but potentially the World Cup as well,” he added.
Mental preparation has also been a focus for the coaching staff, especially with the intensity and emotion that comes with international fixtures. Cunningham stressed the importance of staying grounded and sticking to the plan.
“We focus on the process. It’s really important that we focus on what we’re trying to improve in our game and not focus too much on the outcome,” he explained.
“We’ve changed a bit in how we want to play since the Wallaroos match focusing on key areas of our game and playing in the right areas of the field.
“Understanding how to use our energy properly in the match and staying focused on that. Hopefully, we’ll see some positive change in that area this Friday.”
Fijiana will be looking to start strong as they aim for the Oceania title and use the tournament as a stepping stone toward next year’s Rugby World Cup.
