The Vodafone Fijiana XV side defeated Sakura Japan 24-15 in the second test match, thrilling a packed crowd at Churchill Park last night.
Fijiana captain Merewai Cumu made a special dedication to one of their coaches, Seremaia Bai who will be joining Flying Fijians.
“This win we want to dedicate it to coach Seremaia Bai who will be leaving for the Flying FijiansĀ and also we want to thank our fans for coming out in numbers and our Fiji Rugby vuvale,” Cumu said.
At half-time, Cumu mentioned the team was reminded to minimise mistakes and avoid giving away penalties.
Japan captain Iroha Nagata thanked their supporters for turning up in numbers and supporting the team. She also emphasised they will work on their weaknesses in preparation for their next match against the USA in August.
From the outset, the home side displayed unwavering determination and confidence. Despite a slow start in their line-outs, they dominated possession and showcased relentless defense.
Their efforts paid off with three tries scored: Repeka Tove crossed the line, winger Merewairita Neivosa secured a brace of tries, and Luisa Tisolo added a conversion.
In contrast, Japan managed a solitary try by their captain Iroha Nagata, converting successfully. Fiji led 17-7 at halftime.
The Mosese Rauluni-coached side had a scrappy start in the second half, allowing Sakura to apply pressure and disrupt Fiji’s attacking game. Within the first 10 minutes, Japan capitalized with a penalty kick by fly half Ayasa Otsuka and a try from captain Nagata, though Otsuka missed the conversion.
Fijiana regrouped and ignited the crowd by scoring their fourth try through Unaisi Lalabalavu.
Tisolo successfully converted, securing the match with a final score of 24-15 at full time.
